Nobody thinks about the hot water heater...until it needs to be replaced. One day of cold showers is enough to send any homeowner or property manager scurrying for the nearest appliance store. The trouble is it usually doesn't leave time for comparison, evaluation, or even the consideration of changing the type of water heating system used. This can result in higher than necessary energy costs...and the savings on heating water with a more efficient system could literally pay for the water heater in as little as one year!
Today's hot water heaters are much more energy efficient than their counterparts from even just 5 years ago. Incentives to manufacturers to build higher efficiency units have resulted in less standby heat loss, quicker heating times, and even green technology systems, using solar energy to heat the water. The most common water heater is still the standalone tank model, usually holding somewhere between 20 - 80 gallons, and heated by gas or electricity. These tanks provide better flow for larger homes where hot water might be needed in more than one place at a time. However, they are also the type of water heater that will have some amount of standby heat loss, making it necessary to use energy to maintain the water temperature, even when the hot water isn't being used.
Tankless water heaters use a variety of methods to bring water up to the proper temperature without holding any water in a tank reserve. Some run the water through a coil in the boiler of your hot water-based heating system (if applicable). Others run water through an area of pipe that is heated either by electric coils or a gas burner. These units typically use 20 - 30 percent LESS energy to heat water than a tank system. However, they do not usually push as much water through as would come from a tank, and that can lower the pressure when hot water is being used in more than one place at a time in your home.
