Home cooking begins with the stove. The cornerstone in the "kitchen triangle", the range, whether gas or electric, is where most cooking begins and ends. From delicate and savory sauces on the cooking surface, to slow roasting and baking in the oven, your range gives you the versatility to prepare any number of courses.
Of course, like anything else in the kitchen, there is a wide range of options when choosing the range for your kitchen. The first, most obvious, choice is whether to use a gas range or an electric range. This used to be a fairly simple choice, with the best options being overwhelmingly in the gas category. Howver, the past number of years have brought vast improvement to the electric range, and a gas range is no longer a foregone conclusion.
Once you have made the choice between gas and electric, you now have any number of options regarding the form of your range. A freestanding model is most common, and is simple to install. It slides into a predetermined width space between cabinets most frequently, but as the name implies, it can be used whether or not there is anything on either side of it. The slide-in range also will slip into a space between cabinets, but it offers a built-in look, giving it a much more asthetic appearance. The drop-in range gives the most custom look, and does require custome cabinetry in order to install the range, but this gives it a more consistent look with the rest of the kitchen, and can add greatly to the visual appeal of a kitchen.
